Here for the first time in English translation is a much loved and regularly reprinted classic of Swedish literature. My Son on the Galley - the title is derived from the well-known line from Molière's Les Fourberies de Scapin: 'Que diable allait-il faire dans cette galère' - is in part a traveller's account of a voyage from Scandinavia to the Far East on one of the boats of the Swedish East India Company in 1770, but also a racy commentary on the ways, the habits and the foibles of European society of the day. Its author, Jacob Wallenberg, was a man of natural wit and shrewd powers of observation, well read in both the classics and contemporary European literature, who rather improbably found himself appointed as ship's chaplain aboard the ship Finland on a trading run to Canton. His observations provide the framework for a wickedly humorous account of his experiences.
